FAQs

  • Sessions typically go about 45 minutes once or twice a week. Some people report a noticeable reduction of their symptoms within the first 4-8 sessions and some fully meet their goals anywhere from 12-20+ sessions. After that, appointments are sometimes spaced out with longer time between sessions to provide maintenance of change, and practice of new skills acquired, but we believe counseling should not be a “forever” process. Termination should be planned and collaborative when the client is ready.

  • The cost of counseling varies depending on several things. If you’re using insurance, the cost to you depends on things like your co-pay, and any money you must first pay out of pocket to first meet your yearly deductible.

If you’re paying with credit card privately instead of insurance, our standard fee for a 45-minute counseling session is $150. Some discounts apply for members of churches that partner with us.

If we are not in network with your specific insurance, you pay us directly with online CC, and if you wish, we can supply you with a special type of medical receipt called a “superbill” that you can submit to your insurance for possible partial reimbursement directly from them.

  • We are in network with several major insurances. Call us for a consult and we can help you answer that.

If we are not in network with your insurance provider, you may still have options to help offset the cost of therapy. We can provide you with a superbill, which is a special receipt that includes all the information your insurance company needs to possibly process an out-of-network claim. Many clients are able to receive partial reimbursement after submitting a superbill to their insurance.

    How It Works

    1. Receive a superbill from us after each session.

    2. Submit it to your insurance company (many plans allow online submission).

    3. Your claim is processed according to your out-of-network benefits.

    4. If eligible, your insurance provider reimburses you directly.

Questions to Ask Your Insurance Provider

    • Do I have out-of-network coverage for mental health services?

    • What percentage of the session cost will be reimbursed?

    • Is there a deductible I need to meet first?

    • How do I submit a superbill for reimbursement?

Using your out-of-network benefits can be a flexible way to work with the therapist you choose while receiving some financial support from your insurance company.

Please note: Reimbursement is not guaranteed and depends on your individual insurance plan, deductible, and benefits. Clients are responsible for payment at the time of service.

  • As part of a family counseling session, yes; individually, no. We believe parents play a critical role in the treatment of a child and one or both parents should always be present and participate in the family session with their child. The focus can be on the child and providing them with a safe place to process their fears, concerns, and struggles, but parental support and collaboration is crucial. We believe the primary goal is to strengthen the bond between child and parents and that starts in the therapeutic setting. Parents gain insight and awareness into the struggles and challenges of their child and are able to support and sustain change with their child long after the therapy ends. We have found that this is where lasting change can happen.

  • Absolutely, yes. We counsel clients from any faith, or even no faith. We all value and believe in something. When people live their lives aligned with their values, they tend to experience less internal conflict. Part of counseling is about gaining insight to understand what your values are. It is never our job to push our values or beliefs on you the client. However, I am always happy to share my faith with anyone who asks.

  • All of our counseling appointments are done remotely via telehealth. We use a secure, HIPPA compliant platform called “Simple Practice” to create a face-to-face experience, from the comfort of your home or private space. All you need is a good internet connection (or sometimes we can meet by phone). Workshops for churches and schools can be done in person if local to central Michigan, or via online connection anywhere in the United States.

  • If you are ready to get the counseling process started, call us at (989) 656-1580. If we are unable to answer, leave your name and contact information on our secure answering service and we will return your call by the end of the business day.
